NO CHANGE IN NEBRASKA FARM NUMBERS IN 2010

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- There was no change in the number of farms and ranches in Nebraska during 2010.

The Nebraska Field Office of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says there were 47,200 farms and ranches at the end of the year, the same as in 2009. But those figures are down 200 from 2008's count.

Operations with more than $100,000 in agricultural sales grew by 700, while the number with sales under $100,000 declined by 700. The USDA says the decline in smaller farms appears to be the result of higher commodity prices pushing existing farms into higher sales categories.

There were 45.6 million acres of land in Nebraska's farms and ranches, which was unchanged from the previous year. The average size of an operation also showed no change, at 966 acres.
